Sgian Dubh (Dress)
Rules regarding Sgian Dubh when travelling out of UK (To US)?

Hi there,

I am travelling to a wedding where the guests will be wearing the highland dress. And of course, as part of that highland dress is the sgian dubh (small ceremonial dagger that tucks into your hose).

I know already that this obviously cannot be carried on hand luggage, but has to go on your checked in luggage.

My main question is regarding US law and any rules they have regarding this part of the highland dress.

Is there any rules that prohibit me carrying this? Will they refuse to admit you into the country for having a sgian dubh? etc.

The reason im asking this is so my trip can go as smoothly as possible. Without causing any unnecessary alarm & to co-operate with any rules that the US authorities require that I follow. While also keeping with traditional highland dress.

Thanks

It isn’t an issue for the flights if you pack it in your checked luggage. You could transport a Samurai sword if you wanted:

You are very, very unlikely to have any problems with the local police wherever the wedding will be held. To be absolutely certain, ask your host(s) to check. If the wedding party will travel from the from the ceremony site (church, whatever) to a reception hall there will likely be a police escort and that further reduces the chance you will have a problem.

Note that traditional Highland dress is fairly common in the USA, though unfortunately more associated with funerals rather than weddings. There may be clubs wherever you are going, and an example from where I live is:

Not related to the Sgian Dubh issue, be sure to register for ESTA (it’s free) well in advance, print the confirmation, and have it in your carry-on with a copy of your return ticket plus any hotel reservations.

Up for sale is a Scottish Highlander sgian dubh. The sgian dubh, or lightly diphthongized, is a ceremonial knife (Gaelic sgian) worn as part of the modern Scottish Highland dress along with the kilt. It is worn tucked into the hose with only the pommel visible. The sgian dubh is normally worn on the right leg, but can also be worn on the left, depending on whether the wearer is right or left-hande…
