Military Toddler Bed

My toddler is becoming out of control…?
I have a 2 1/2 year old son and I just gave birth to my second,a girl. We have been home all of one week and I feel as if I am at wits end. He refuses to listen to anything I tell him, much less follow directions. From the time he gets up,he is screaming and running, throwing things, jumping, flipping off of furniture..you name it. Between taking care of the baby, sleepless nights, and continuously fighting with my toddler,I feel too overwhelmed. I can’t even take a potty break! Not to mention I had a C-Section,I have had absolutely no time to recover and I have been on my feet nonstop since I stepped out of the hospital bed. My husband helps when he is here, but the military keeps him extremely busy. I have tried everything with my son…time outs, spanking, talking, reasoning…nothing is effective. I need more tips!! Help!
*This has been going on since before the baby,so I don’t believe he may be acting out..this has gotten to be a normal. He just will not mind at all.
I really think kids can sense change! Even before the baby is born! I have started a new technique with my kids. (I have a 5-year old girl, a 3 year-old boy and a 2 year-old boy.) I wrote down a list of EVERY quality I want them to posess as an adult (honest, loving, great friend etc…). Every time my children do something related to one of those qualities, I praise them…then, praise them again. This technique definitely takes A LOT of patience, but in a week or two…if you’re praising every wonderful thing he does RIGHT when he does it, he should settle down a little. For instance…if your son kisses your daughter (or you) say to him, “I love it when you kiss your sister. You are such a loving brother. She is so lucky that you love her so much!” Or, if he’s NOT listening to you, and he’s jumping off the furniture, say to him, “I love it when you sit quietly next to me. Maybe you could get a book so we can read together.” I know it sounds crazy to say that when he’s jumping off things, but it amazes me how children thrive off of what’s focussed on. If you focus on the wonderful things your child does, (or the wonderful things you WISH he would do) he will want to do more wonderful things! I read “Christlike Parenting” (that’s where this idea came from)and it has worked wonders!!! Good luck!
