Dehydration and Drinking on the Trail

If you’ve read my other articles on the subject, you will have all of the gear necessary to undertake a productive outdoor adventure trip. I have been remiss on an important topic, however: the way to actually pack your things! Even if this might seem obvious, in fact a large amount of space is wasted if it is not done properly. Further, people might begin to skimp on important items when they are running out of space. Never fear, below I’ll outline tips on how to pack for efficiency, weight distribution, and also by order of importance for the trail.

Visualize your pack as being in layers. We’ll start from the bottom up, and end right at the point at which you zip the pack. The base layer is the place we will put clothes, and later soiled clothes. You need to first put a small trash bag in the bottom of the pack for later. This can become our “laundry bag.” Why plastic? You might be surprised to find that several of your clothes are certain to get quite wet with perspiration. Getting them to totally dry is going to be difficult, and getting the smell out will need a washer. Placing them in a sealed environment helps keep your pack far more fresh and dry.

The subsequent layer will be your clean clothes. Instead of folding them as you normally would, you need to lay them out flat on the floor and slowly and carefully roll them up. You will want your shirts to be no greater than thin taquito-like rolls, whilst your pants ought to be like long burritos. This kind of of rolling will save you space, as you will see as soon as you start placing them within your pack. The shape’s design lends itself to the contours of the pack and can leave you a lot more space towards the top for your equipment.

The subsequent layer is your food. You will want to pack your trail food more towards the back, particularly when you have flat packs of them. If you find this this too hard, place a thin layer of clothes between your back and the food so you’ve got a softer, but nevertheless firm backrest.

Above the foodstuff you will have your less essential equipment. Fire starting tools, water purification, things such as this which might be useful, but rarely necessitate immediate deployment. Try many different types of fitting things in until you find out which things will fit like a puzzle. Also, if there are any brand-new items, don’t forget to take them right out of the packaging. Towards the top of the pack is where you want your safety equipment and snacks. Your whistles, flares for those who have them, radios, and emergency first aid kit must be some of the first things you reach in and grab if necessary. Should someone be bitten by a snake or trip and hurt their ankle, you don’t want to need to unload all your gear to gain access to a wrap or anti-venom kit. The snacks part is left for last for those times you start to feel hungry and you don’t have any food on you, you won’t need to have to stop the entire group to fill up.

If you are paying attention, you’ll notice I left one important item out: water. Particularly for anyone who is on one of our Grand Canyon hiking trips, water is the most critical asset. Water will normally go in one of two places. The 1st will probably be inside a canteen or bottle in the holder in your backpack or on your person. The second is within a hydration system (similar to a Camelback) that can fit either inside a pouch inside your pack or in a smaller, thinner backpack you’ll wear aside your main one. Since water will be your most important asset, it should have a special location. Water is the second pack, not part of your first one.
