Benjamin Sheridan Supper Streak B1500STM/B1500BTM Review
A Little Background
This is a very capable and gorgeous air rifle that you can pick up at a greatly discounted price because Crosman discontinued these models and the ramining inventory is being liquidated. Crosman still supports these guns and will honor the standard warrantee provided you purchase it new from a retailer.
The discontinued models are the B1500BTM and 1500STM. These are virtually identical guns except the BTM has a blued finish and the STM has a nickel finish. I will be reviewing the STM in .177 caliber but you can expect the same performance from the BTM as well. I believe the STM’s are getting pretty scarce but there are plenty of the BTM’s out there still. I got mine through this website.
Packaging
The gun comes in a well protected, handsome slip cover box. The gun is wrapped in paper and covered with a heavy plastic bag and fitted into a Styrofoam cutout, everything is well fitted and secured. The gun comes fully assembled with the scope mounted and the flip-up optical covers in place.
The accessories include a small tube of cylinder oil (very important), an Allen wrench with a few extra screws, an oiled cloth, a plastic trigger lock (not very stout) and the expected documentation.
First Impressions
When pulling this gun out of the box for the first time you will quickly notice two things, this is a very BIG gun, it’s long at about 50″ and hefty at nearly 10 pounds. Once you get all the packaging removed you then very next thing you will notice is that this gun is drop-dead gorgeous. The ambidextrous thumbhole stock is made of extremely nice wood (not sure what type of wood) with a medium light oil type finish, very crisp and tasteful checkering and a fairly thick recoil pad. The length of pull on the stock is on the long side and probably fit someone well over 6 feet tall but most of us will eventually want to have this cut down to a shorter length or just change out the recoil pad for a thin one.
The fit and finish was excellent, but like most of these high power air guns, you need to go through and ensure all of the critical points are tightened. You will need to go back and re-tighten these points a number of times during the break-in period. My gun was pretty clean right out of the box, but it’s not a bad idea to wipe it all down with the provided cloth to ensure you have protective layer of oil on it before exposing it to the elements.
The required cocking force on this gun is a little on the heavy side, (not the worst I have encountered) because of the very heavy cylinder spring that is needed to produce the extreme velocities this gun is capable of. The long barrel length gives you a bit more leverage to get this one cocked.
The gun also comes with a set of very impressive set of open sights, with a hooded front and micro adjustable rear sight. I did not test these during this review but have no reason to believe these would not perform as well as they look.
The Super Streak comes with an adjustable trigger (adjustable for length of pull) but this is one of the very few features I was not completely happy with. The trigger felt fine and was smooth with a crisp break, but even fully adjusted the length of pull is way to long for me. This is the one thing I will consider changing on this gun.
The first time you fire this gun you will be shocked at the very sharp report which sounds more like a .22 rimfire than a pellet rifle. This is especially true when using the non-lead hyper velocity pellets like the Gamo PBA. This can be a downside for an air rifle if you are hoping to do some stealthy back yard pest control. If you use the heaviest lead pellets you can find and get the velocities done below a 1000 fps (what I recommend anyway) the report will be diminished greatly.
As I mentioned earlier, this is a big gun but the heft actually works in your favor to tame the fairly brisk recoil and help with off hand shooting accuracy. The feel of the gun is very natural when brought up to your shoulder and, at least for me, the comb height was perfect to quickly put your eye in the right spot for quick target acquisition.
The Center Pont 4-16X40, nitrogen filled variable scope is just plain awesome. It has a lighted reticule which can be adjusted for color (red or green) and brightness. The optics are super clear and the variable magnification adjuster is positive and precise. The manual range focus adjusts from 5-yards to infinity. The windage and elevation adjustments are made with the quick release locking turrets and have ¼” MOA per click. I really like these adjusters but make sure after each adjustment you tighten the locker rings.
Performance
All of the high power, break barrel spring guns require a break in period to ensure that the spring is seated and settled. The velocities for first 100 to 200 rounds will vary somewhat while the spring is settling and evening out. The manual recommends shooting 200 rounds to accomplish this break in process. After you have broken in the gun and then re-tightened all of the critical points you are ready to hit the bench and really dial in the point of aim for you intended shooting. I zeroed mine at 35 yards and was very surprised at the accuracy this gun can produce with the right ammo. As I said earlier, this gun really likes heavy pellets and velocities of around 950 to 1000 fps for best accuracy.
When firing the non-lead high velocity ammo like the Gamo PBA’s, this gun is a screamer. I have not run this through a chronograph but I’m sure I was hitting close to the advertized 1500 fps, unfortunately, the accuracy goes down hill quickly when using these pellets. Don’t get me wrong, this gun will still get you decent groups with this ammo but it’s no where near as consistent as the heavier lead pellets. This is due I’m sure to the light weight of the non-lead stuff and their instability when traveling at such high velocities. I was able to get some ¾” groups with the Crosman Destroyer pellets.
I took the gun out to one of my local secret hunting spots for a little ground squirrel action. While I did squarely hit three squirrels from 25 to 35 yards, I was not able to recover any of them because on this day they were unwilling to venture out from their rock pile and when hit they would trash around until they wiggled back down into the rock piles. In the future I will focus on just head shots to hopefully mitigate this problem.
When doing any off-hand shooting, you want to use the military (or artillery) method, with the gun up to your shoulder, place your left open-palm at the center balance point and just rest the gun in your hand rather than gripping the fore-end. This allows the gun to freely move forward when fired (the direction of recoil on these types of guns). This will take a bit of practice but does wonders for your off-hand accuracy.
One other thing I would mention is if you are going to hunt with this gun you need to get some type of sling. The gun does not come with sling mounts so you will need to install your own. The front sling mount may be problematic due to the cut out area on the stock needed for the cocking mechanism.
Final thoughts
I am very pleased with both the over-all aesthetics, fit and finish and performance of this gun. I would definitely recommend this to any serious or semi-serious air gunner and pest hunter. I give the Benjamin Sheridan Super Streak a four-out-of-five (4-5) overall rating, and honestly the only real detraction is the long trigger pull. However, I can not recommend this for younger shooters due to it’s size, necessary cocking force and lethality. The price ranges from $216 to $260 on a few websites. I got mine from the The Raspy Rabbit.
About the Author
My name is Dennis Crownover and I have been an avid hunter for most of the 51 years I have been alive. I’ve hunted just about every game animal in North America but predator hunting has been my passion since I was a young boy growing up in Salmon Idaho. At that time, I ran a trap line rather than the traditional paper route and all of my winter time income came from the sale of furs obtained from my trapping and predator calling ventures.
Everyone has that period in their life that they look back on as the best years……..mine was age 14-17 where I spent all of my spare time hunting, fishing and exploring the vast wilderness along the Continental Divide in the early 1970′s.
