Long Term Food Storage – Why It’s Important and How to Go About It
There are a variety of reasons why individuals and families decide to go the route of long term food storage to protect themselves. In this article, we will discuss a few of the more prominent of these reasons, as well as a few tips that can make this as painless an activity as possible.
So why would you consider long term food storage as a safety precaution for you and your family? I believe there are three big reasons why you may want to consider doing this, and why many of your friends and neighbors likely already are. Here they are in no particular order:
1. Physical catastrophe, natural or otherwise. This would include hurricane, earthquake, tsunami, tornado, flood, domestic war and/or rioting, and other such unforeseen emergency situations.
2. Extreme financial hardship. In case you’ve been living under a rock, our economy is about as stable as a see-saw, and job security has become an absolute myth, at best. In the event that you should find yourself with no job or even any prospects, long term food storage could very certainly save yours and your family’s lives.
3. Proactive reasons. It isn’t always about preparing for the worst. Some people may feel more empowered to leverage their financial world and save for a brighter tomorrow if food wasn’t such a major ongoing expense. Many of these people buy tons of food upfront so that they don’t have to be bothered with it for a while. This frees them up to save for education expenses, vacations, toys… or just to save for the sake of saving.
Whatever your reason is for reading this article, just realize that long term food storage can be a very smart decision that can provide you and yours with some much-needed peace of mind. And few things are as powerful or feel as good as that. So now let’s discuss the two main types of long term food storage and why you may want to consider them.
Type #1:
Do it yourself. This entails heading to your local Cost-Co and going nuts, or simply buying a few more long shelf-life items than you need each week until you’ve got a year or more worth of surplus saved up. This method is good for people who are willing to set a long-term plan and stick with it for a while.
Type #2:
Seek out and take advantage of the services of a “food insurance” type of company. These companies can ship you huge quantities of pre-packaged foods for fairly reasonable prices. The meals come in a variety of packaging options, and could be considered similar to military MRE’s. This is a fantastic long term food storage option for people who don’t want as little guesswork and hassle involved with this process as possible.
