Military Medals vs. Ribbons…What’s the Difference?
I’m planning on creating a display case for my dad for Christmas with the awards from his Navy career.
He only has the small ribbons on his uniform, but I want to put the medals in the display case. I know where I can order them, but I was wondering if there is a difference between the two?
I don’t want to put the medals in the case if they signify a higher rank or something. He was a 2nd class petty officer when he retired.
Would it be ok to put the medals in or should I just stick with the ribbons?
a shadow box is a wonderful gesture to your father for his service in the navy. to answer your question, there are some medals that also come with a ribbon to wear, and there are some ribbons that do NOT come with a medal. medals do not signify a higher rank so don’t worry about that. this is what i did for my father for his shadow box, i got all the ribbons that he earned, placed them in the proper order from most significant to the least, then did the same for his medals along with any other special badges and a name tape in the middle. it would be a good idea if you went to the nearest base exchange and got new ribbons to use instead of the old ones. if you have any questions, email me, i’ll be happy to help.
