Military Grade Gps
Is the US GPS available to the Taliban? Or is there some way the military blacks out the open civilian…?
…GPS signals over the areas where the Taliban operates? We know that civilian-grade GPS receivers are legally available almost everywhere, and these can be quite accurate – to a few meters under favorable conditions. Surely the Taliban and other insurgents would seek to take advantage of this?
Yes it is available to them with just as good accuracy as the rest or the world.
The US does have the option to re-enable selective availability over certain regions of the world, this would degrade civilian GPS accuracy to a few hundred meters while not impacting military GPS.
However the Afghan military and police probably use GPS more than the insurgents as would the civilian contractors working with the US military. Because of this degrading GPS in the region would probably do more harm than good.
