Can a soldier receive multiple discharges when they leave the military?

One of my relatives served 8 years in the military in the 70′s and we were told that he was medically discharged for alcoholism. I visited him recently and noticed he has (what appeared to be) 5 discharge certificates(?) framed on his wall with different year dates on them, the latest from 1990.
When someone is discharged, do they receive discharge papers/certificates more than once??

Whoever is giving each one of you the “thumbs down” needs to get a life.

Whenever you re-enlist you recieve a discharge certificate. So he may have 5 if he re-enlisted 4 times and finally got on for the 5th one.
