How important is a Canteen?

I bought a military canteen with a carrying pouch and cup for about $8 (is that a good price?) The canteen and cup are a bit used, but the pouch is new. I wanted to buy a canteen to carry with me when I go camping, but I also have a larger 3 gallon jug on a strap, that I use to carry water. Is it important to have a smaller canteen to carry with you, when you venture away from your camp?

A sturdy water container is one of the most important survival basics. You will find it in most survival kit list, among the top ten items.

It’s always smart to carry some basics, even for day hikes, or when just venturing from camp.

8 bucks for canteen, cup and pouch? Good price. Buy a bottle of iodine water purification tablets (you can find them at any sporting goods store, or walmart), they fit just perfect in the small pocket in the pouch (that’s what the little pouch was design for). You can also complement you kit with a canteen cup stove. It fits around the cup for storage inside the canteen cover. It works with fuel tablets (like esbit of trioxane (from a surplus store) and small pieces of wood.
