The Art of War (Chinese: 孫子兵 法; pinyin: Sūnzǐ Bīngfǎ) is a Chinese military treatise that was most likely written by Sun Tzu in the 6th century BC, during the Spring and Autumn period. (Some scholars believe it was written during the later Warring States period.) Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it is said to be the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time, and still one of the basic texts.
The Art of War is one of the oldest and most successful books on military strategy. It has had an influence on Eastern military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu suggested the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He thought that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through an established list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. 【始計第一】 (I. LAYING PLANS )
1.孫子曰： 兵者，國之大事，死生之地，存亡之道，不可不察也。
孫子說：戰爭是一個國家的頭等大事，關係到軍民的生死，國家的存亡，是不能不慎重周密地觀察、分析、研究。
Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State.

【作戰第二】 (II. WAGING WAR)
1.孫子曰： 凡用兵之法，馳車千駟，革車千乘，帶甲十萬，千里饋糧，則內外之費，賓客之用，膠漆之材，車甲之奉，日費千金，然後十萬之師舉矣。
孫子說：要興兵作戰，需做的物資準備有，輕車千輛，重車千輛，全副武裝的士兵十萬，並向千里之外運送糧食。那麼前後方的軍內外開支，招待使節、策士的用 度，用於武器維修的膠漆等材料費用，保養戰車、甲冑的支出等，每天要消耗千金。按照這樣的標準準備之後，十萬大軍才可出發上戰場。
Sun Tzu said: In the operations of war, where there are in the field a thousand swift chariots, as many heavy chariots, and a hundred thousand mail-clad soldiers, with provisions enough to carry them a thousand li, the expenditure at home and at the front, including entertainment of guests, small items such as glue and paint, and sums spent on chariots and armor, will reach the total of a thousand ounces of silver per day. Such is the cost of raising an army of 100,000 men.

【謀攻第三】 (III. ATTACK BY STRATAGEM)
5.故知勝有五：知可以戰與不可以戰者勝，識眾寡之用者勝，上下同欲者勝，以虞待不虞者勝，將能而君不御者勝。此五者，知勝之道也。
所以，預見勝利有五個方面：能準確判斷仗能打或不能打的，勝；知道根據敵我雙方兵力的多少採取對策者，勝；全國上下，全軍上下，意願一致、同心協力的， 勝；以有充分準備來對付毫無準備的，勝；主將精通軍事、精於權變，君主又不加干預的，勝。以上就是預見勝利的方法。
The general, unable to control his irritation, will launch his men to the assault like swarming ants, with the result that one-third of his men are slain, while the town still remains untaken. Such are the disastrous effects of a siege.

【軍形第四】 (IV. TACTICAL DISPOSITIONS)
1.孫子曰： 昔之善戰者，先為不可勝，以待敵之可勝。不可勝在己，可勝在敵。故善戰者，能為不可勝，不能使敵之必可勝。故曰：勝可知，而不可為。
孫子說：以前善於用兵作戰的人，總是首先創造自己不可戰勝的條件，並等待可以戰勝敵人的機會。使自己不被戰勝，其主動權掌握在自己手中；敵人能否被戰勝， 在於敵人是否給我們以可乘之機。所以，善於作戰的人只能夠使自己不被戰勝，而不能使敵人一定會被我軍戰勝。所以說，勝利可以預見，卻不能強求。
Sun Tzu said: The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy.

2.不可勝者，守也；可勝者，攻也。守則不足，攻則有餘。善守者藏於九地之下，善攻者動於九天之上，故能自保而全勝也。
敵人無可乘之機，不能被戰勝，且防守以待之；敵人有可乘之機，能夠被戰勝，則出奇攻而取之。防守是因為我方兵力不足，進攻是因為兵力超過對方。善於防守 的，隱藏自己的兵力如同在深不可測的地下；善於進攻的部隊就像從天而降，敵不及防。這樣，才能保全自己而獲得全勝。
To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
