Interested in Joining the Military? Do You Know About the ASVAB?

Are you thinking about going into the United States military? If so, you should be aware that there is an aptitude examination that all potential recruits have to take: the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).

The ASVAB is a test that not only determines whether or not you’re qualified for enlistment, but what kind duties you’re best fit to perform. The scores from specific sections are used for appointing you a post – high scores on the Auto and Shop Information and Mathematical Knowledge sections might qualify you, for instance, for an Engineering job in the Navy. It is not an IQ test – scores are determined based on all of the other students who take your particular version of the exam. If, for instance, you manage to get a 60 on the test, it implies that you performed better than 60 percent of your peers.

People often take the student version, which is a paper test, during high school, and their scores then remain active for two years. If you’ve finished your secondary education, you would probably take a computerized version of the test that has one more section than the student one because it separates the Auto and Shop Information into two parts. If your school is not currently offering the exam and you would like to take it, speak to your guidance counselors and they will find out where you can take the ASVAB.

For the purposes of the military, your scores are important and you should do some test prep before taking the examination. There are minimum scores that you must achieve in order quality for both specific duties and the military in general. In fact, the higher your score, the more choice you have and the higher your enlistment bonus. If you already know which specialty jobs interest you, you can tailor your test prep to focus on those sections that are used to determine placement in those jobs.

Students who are not sure about the military can take the ASVAB too – it’s one of the world’s largest multi-aptitude tests, and you can use it instead as a career aptitude guide. College isn’t always the best choice for a student, and the exam might help you determine if Vocational School is the right path for you.
