Which sword is best for Iaido?
I Have just started to learn Iaido. I have a bokken at the moment and wish to get a proper sword to practice with within the dojo.
What sword would people recommend as a drawing sword for a beginner?
How do people rate Paul Chen Swords?
Iaito can be chep or very expensive. When I began iaido I started with a cheap $40 replica sword. While this is not well balanced and not very durable, it is good enough to learn some basics with (all you will be missing is the “hi”, the grooves on the side of the blade that whistle when you are cutting correctly) and if you find after a few months that you don’t like iaido as much as you thought you did, you aren’t out $300 to $800 for an iaito.
Our school did not allow the use of shinken until we reached shodan (1st degree black belt) and for good reason as related above. I watched a black belt from Japan take his thumb off in a demonstration when he got a little careless. I have poked myself numerous times with unsharpened iaito (the tip is still capable of doing some damage if you’re not careful) in the kyu ranks and in so learning I have never cut myself with my real sword.
Here are some sites for iaito, from inexpensive to custom made. Check with your instructor before you buy to make sure you get a sword that is the correct length for you, as this is very important to iaido.
